Things Only Longtime Gamers Will Understand
Greetings gamers of all levels! If you have been a player since the good old days of Pong or are more familiar with Play Station 2, then you must know that there are specific things only professional gamers understand. These experiences help mold us, sometimes as friends and sometimes as enemies, but at the end of the day, that is the happiness gaming brings which we all seek!
Grab your controller, get comfy, and let’s take a stroll through the gaming world as we recall those memories that unite veteran gamers.
1. The Struggle of Blowing Into Cartridges
Every NES or SNES gamer must be familiar with the cartridge “blowing” technique. Do you remember the time when no game would start, and the only option left was to blow into the cartridge as hard as you could? Real gamers know this struggle all too well. That special breath somehow did the job—it definitely changed the seating arrangement of the cartridge and perhaps that’s what did the trick.
With no frantic blowing sessions required these days, we certainly don’t have the same memories. But we do now, with digital downloads available.
2. The Sorrow Caused by No Save Points
Old video games did not feature autosaves or quick saves, unlike modern technology. Consider this: your mother asks you to come for dinner, but you are only a step away from defeating the last boss in Legend of Zelda (an open-world adventure video game). You would have two options:
You could pause the game, with your mother beside you, and pray no one is planning to turn the console off at the dinner table.
You could accept defeat for the entire day, which is quite awful, and start over the next day.
When auto-save features weren’t available, long gamers developed a sixth sense for taking breaks and knew when to do so.
3. Split-Screen Multiplayer at its Finest
Now, online multiplayer is a thing, which is quite cool, but nothing compares to setting next to your friends and competing in Mario Kart (a competitive driving game) or GoldenEye 007 (a shooting game) while yelling furiously next to them. Screen-peeking, friendly banter, and chaos made these experiences feel magical.
Unplugging your controller right before you won was, for some, a common occurrence, but now new-age gamers only have Paraguay to thank for not experiencing that playful annoyance, and that is regrettable.
4. The Enigma of Game Manuals
Video manuals served as guides, holding secrets, tips, and sometimes even lore. For the reasons above, the phenomenon we call the internet never existed and was considered sacred. They unlocked a new level of excitement on the ride back.
Most gamers, unlike in the old days, skip fetching physical manuals and newer consoles offer in-game tutorials, which from in-traffic waiting statement, was a superb experience.
5. The Dreaded Dangers of Game Disc Scratches
The introduction of CD and DVD-based games brought about a new fear, disc scratches. One careless action, and you were left to deal with a game that was no longer playable. Scratched discs became a gamer’s plight, and they developed careful rituals surrounding gentle handling, proper storage, and even desperate attempts at fixing the scratches with toothpaste—too bad it never worked.
6. Game Genie: The Magic of Cheat Codes
Before microtransactions took over, cheat codes existed. If We can go Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start, how many of you Contra players have the urge to scream.
To many, cheat codes felt like gifts developers left behind. You had absolue freedom with infinite lives, bigheaded characters, and flying cars. Nowadays, we have mods and DLC to thank for cheat codes being altered, but that feeling of unlocking a secret code is irreplaceable.
7. Boot-up Sounds: A Walk Down Memory Lane
Remember how every time you turned on a console, there was a special boot up sound? I am equally as interested in when Sega Genesis screams “SEGA!” just as Gamers get goosebumps thinking about PlayStations “dun-dun-DUN!” and the cheerful GameCube jingle.
8. The Struggle of No Internet Guides
Stuck in a game nowadays? All you need to do is google it. But back in the days, your options were to call a friend, read a strategy guide, or endure a lot of waiting and trial and error. There’s nothing quite like the priceless feeling of achieving utter victory over that impossible level without external guidance.
9. The Changing Face of Video Game Graphics
The 8 bit era of gaming all the way to today’s 4K graphics is a significant advancement. Veteran gamers recall how rudimentary Mario looked as a blob of squares or how the characters in Final Fantasy didn’t even have facial features. Today however, games are so meticulously designed that there individual hair strands can be counted.
While the current graphics are astonishing, the older graphics will always hold some nostalgic charm.
10. The Unity Found in Gaming Communities
From an early age, gamers have blended well together. Be it haggling over instructions at the playground or getting into heated debates about which Pokémon was the best starter—the gaming world was the foundation of many friendships. Now , with chat rooms and streaming platforms, that community has reached uncharted heights.
The Importance of these Memories
From me as an old gamer, gaming is much more than just playing a game—a lifetime of experiences can be narrated that included spinning on cartridges, getting used to no save files, survival, oh! The accolades. Bottom line, these moments are the essence of one’s identity.
So whenever you decide to launch a game, don’t forget to take a moment to reflect on what has been achieved and if you are someone newer to the gaming world, make sure to engage with veteran gamers. Believe me, sharing these memories is something we really enjoy. What’s your favorite longtime gamer memory? Please drop it in the comments section- let’s geek out together!
